Today in class we had a presentation by Jesse Miller on digital consent and awareness. The presentation brought to light the changing digital revolution we are living in and both the positives and negative affects of these changes. As many things in life, things can be both good and bad, depending on how it’s used. Social media and the internet is no different. It’s very important as future educators that we are aware of the social media footprint we make, as well as know how to properly use it in a respectful way. We will be trusted with sensitive information, and it is important that we know the laws and boundaries that are in place to protect this kind of information, and follow it diligently. The presentation offered many opportunities to ask questions and talk about many different topics surrounding social media and privacy laws, which was great for all of us teacher candidates to interact with Jesse. The internet and social media is relatively new, and we don’t yet have a lot of information on the long term affect it may have on kids, so until we gather more information it’s important that we take as many measures as we can to keep everyone safe.
